How do I adopt a kitten?
Reach out to get the process started. There is not a form to fill out as a kitten application which is why it is important that we go over a few points regarding your kitten to make sure your kitten will be a good addition to your family. If it seems that the kitten you are interested in will be a good fit for your home, we can either move forward on a deposit or, if the kitten is ready to go home, we can arrange that. Payment is due on pickup or delivery.
How do I pay the deposit?
To cut back on both fraud and miscommunications, there is not a way to pay a deposit on this site. The deposit can be taken after a discussion about expectations in the adoption process. It can be taken via PayPal, Venmo, or cash if you are arranging a visit to meet your kitten prior to her adoption day.
Do you ship?
No. Shipping kittens through an airline is a somewhat dangerous ordeal. The ride in cargo is not pressurized or temperature controlled to the same degree that it is inside the cabin.
In state delivery, or meeting at a centralized location to spare a few hours drive is possible.
Where are you?
Augusta, Maine.
Can I visit the kittens?
Yes, you may be able to visit before your adoption day.
Cushnoc is not a closed cattery. A best effort is taken to avoid contaminating the kitten room, with handwashing; and we also ask that you remove your shoes and coats before handling the kittens. Kittens have very fragile immune systems particularly before they have all their vaccinations so your cooperation with this is appreciated. Nonetheless, you are welcome to come visit kittens before putting down a deposit.
Is there another way to see my kitten besides visiting?
Yes, we can do a video call. This is a great option if Augusta is a long drive, or if the weather is terrible.
When is my kitten ready to come home?
State law in Maine is 8 weeks. Beyond that 8 week minimum, your kitten must go to her first vet appointment. This is scheduled as close to the 8th week birthday as possible, but can sometimes take another week. Your kitten will not be ready until the day after her vet appointment. Additionally, if there is any reason determined through that vet appointment or in advance that more time is needed, your kitten may not be ready to go yet (this is rare).
Beyond these factors it is up to scheduling.
My kitten is ready but I’m not! Help! Can you hold him for me?
Yes, up to 12 weeks old or otherwise arranged, if a deposit has been placed.
What is included with my kitten?
Each kitten comes with age appropriate shots and vet care, a heath guarantee, CFA registration materials, and a kitten kit.
The kitten kit has basic supplies like kitten kibble, wet food, and some toys.
Do you do DNA testing?
Yes. All parent cats are DNA tested. None have gene variants that are known to be related to Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), nor any other harmful genetic disorders. Kittens are not individually tested since they inherit their DNA from their parents.
Is the polydactyl trait dangerous for cats?
No. The difference between the classic pawed cats and the polydactyl ones is the number of toes. It is not associated with any serious health problems. One minor health problem can be that their claws can become overgrown if they are not trimmed regularly which can cut their feet, so it is even more important than the classic pawed cats to trim their nails regularly.
How big will my kitten be when full grown?
Each kitten is unique so it is impossible to know exactly. Cushnoc cats have a high percentage of European Maine Coon lines, so the kittens are fairly large. That said the objective has not been for the largest cats possible but for the healthiest cats possible, so your kitten will probably be between 10 to 20lbs – the size of a large but not extraordinarily humongous cat.
Can I name my kitten?
Yes. The kittens are not yet registered, so you can choose the name you like on his registration. The exception to this is older kittens or cats. For example Gizmo, who is one of the kittens from the 2024 litter is available, but he was already registered (his registered name is Giorgio). If you let me know your kitten’s new name I will update it anywhere it is displayed on the web.
